FAQs.

How does a Deedster challenge work?

Each challenge takes employees through three stages. First, awareness: a carbon footprint calculator based on their lifestyle. Second, knowledge: themed quizzes set out as a series of stations. Third, action: personalised deeds suggested from their profile. Some deeds can be saved as habits and repeated every day.

How do employees join a challenge?

Employees download the Deedster app for iPhone or Android and join with an invitation code or QR code. They register with their work email, answer a few lifestyle questions to calculate their footprint, and then start the quizzes and deeds. We provide an employee onboarding webpage and email templates for your internal communications.

How do teams win a Deedster challenge?

Challenges can be scored in three ways:

  • average number of deeds per team member
  • total CO2e saved
  • impact points, which also reward actions that benefit biodiversity, water and other people.
For the last 48 hours the leaderboard is hidden, so the result stays a surprise.

How is an employee’s carbon footprint calculated?

The calculator covers five areas: eating habits, housing, commuting, long-distance travel and shopping. It works from a life-cycle perspective, using research, models and data from external sustainability experts. The first result uses averages, and employees can then fine-tune each category for a more accurate figure. Public spending, such as schools and roads, isn’t included.

What is a sustainable carbon footprint per person?

There’s no single agreed figure. Deedster uses 1 tonne CO2e per person per year. That’s the global per-capita footprint needed by 2050 to align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal, estimated from several public and academic sources.

What data does an employer see about employees?

Employers see participants’ names and email addresses, so the project team knows who has joined and who may need help onboarding. Individual carbon footprints are never shared with the employer. Footprint data is reported in aggregate only.

What can other employees see?

Teammates can see how many deeds someone has completed, plus the CO2e savings or impact points linked to them. Individual footprints are not shown to anyone in the app or to third parties.

Where does the app’s content come from?

Quiz content and learning are based on scientific, official and expert sources. Deedster has consulted its partner WWF on the content. Organisations can choose themed challenges from the content library and tailor them to their own sustainability strategy.

Is Deedster available in other languages, and how is sign-in secured?

Challenges and resources are available in 20 languages. Sign-up is secured through email-domain verification, and single sign-on is also supported.
